My journey to wearing a hair topper daily.
I always used to have a very lovely head of hair that I always wore it long passed my shoulders with added highlights to my brunette colour. In 2014 I first noticed a small patch of missing hair. It actually was my spinning instructor who noticed it as it was at the back of my head just by my ponytail. I really didn’t think too much about it. I had that perfect round patch for a few months with not a lot of change. I then had a life event that was very stressful for me and this patch became a far larger area of hair loss.
January 2015 I had lost enough hair to have to look into covering up the hair loss. I had also been diagnosed with alopecia areata and had been given a steroid cream to put on any patches to encourage regrowth. I turned to Flip-in hair which is more widely known as halo hair. An invisible band that has hair attached that sits around your head from ear to ear. This gave me really good coverage and worked really well for about year I wore it every day to cover the ever-growing alopecia patch.
Wigs & Motherhood
My first daughter was born in February 2016 by this time my hair loss was pretty bad. I had alopecia patches all over by this point but also some regrowth my hair was looking pretty bad and I was feeling pretty low. The time had come when I knew I needed more then my Flip-in hair, I was referred by my GP to a dermatologist who prescribed me with a prescription for a wig. I took my Mum with me for moral support and was told that I didn’t have enough hair for anything other than a wig.
I did not get along with wearing wigs at all I hated how they felt on my head, It took me a long time for me to apply them as I was taping down the front of the wig each time which I found very stressful. I didn’t have any idea what I was doing and had no help or guidance on navigating this new world of alternative hair. The saving grace in all of this was the distraction of motherhood which didn’t give me allot of time to dwell on my hair situation.
I spent allot of money on different wigs always believing the next one would be the one that looked like the old me, I never achieved this unfortunately. I then invested in a human hair wig which was an improvement to how I felt wearing synthetic hair. I still felt that wigs were very heavy, the wigs wore me rather than me wearing the wigs. It was then suggested to me that my human hair wigs could be changed into a hair topper. I was struggling so much at this point, the school run would filled me with dread.
Hair Toppers & Happiness
I can’t put into words how much time I spent looking at endless videos reviews and pictures of wigs and every time I tried one on it gave me the same sinking feeling of overwhelming sadness and loss of my own hair. As soon as I tried a hair topper every changed for the better I felt like me again a better version even with amazing hair that looked natural was effortless and worked around my lifestyle.
I was able to blend my own hairline into the front of the hair topper and integrate my own hair with the hair topper. It wasn’t easy knowing where to start but with the help of my own research and learning what I needed to consider when choosing a hair topper I found my perfect topper. I have now been wearing hair toppers for the last 3 years.
Mello-Hair
I have set up Mello-Hair in September 2022 initially, being my husbands idea. I feel I have a really good knowledge of hair toppers, and I absolutely know how it feels to lose your hair. I have a consultation room that I can welcome ladies into a comfortable private space where they can try on as many hair toppers as they need to. The moment a lady finds the right hair topper, is truly amazing and the best feeling in the world.
I hope I can pass on my knowledge and have a hair topper that can help someone feel like there old self again as that’s what we are all aiming for. Its considered to be one of the hardest things to go through loosing your hair I hope I can hold your hand through the process and make it just that little bit easier to love with.
