Human Hair Care
Similar to how you would take care of your natural hair, you should also take care of your hair topper in the same way. However, you need to wash your hair topper as little as possible. You should aim to wash your hair topper every couple of months if you are wearing the piece daily. Washing the piece too often will affect the longevity of the hair, you will know when the hair topper needs washing.
The follicles on our heads produce oils that maintain the healthy oils in our hair. Hair toppers do not have hair follicles so therefore will not be getting the daily oils needed to keep the hair hydrated. When you wash your hair topper you will be stripping away the oils so we always need to use a gentle shampoo and conditioner.
How to wash your human hair topper
Firstly before washing your topper, you need to make sure the clips are closed before you start.
- Detangle the hair topper using a detangling brush before washing to avoid tangling and shedding.
- Run the shower head or tap until you reach a lukewarm temperature. Do not use hot water as this can cause damage to the cap. Wet the hair completely, ready for shampooing.
- Use a sulfate-free colour protect shampoo it doesn’t need to be expensive, I use a Herbal Essence shampoo, Use a good amount and wash the hair from top to bottom, including the cap. Shampoo will not damage the knots on your topper. Do not rub or scrub the hair as that will make it tangle.
- Rinse well under running water, this may take a little longer on your hair topper than it would on your own head.
- I would recommend using a conditioning mask on your hair topper. It’s worth spending a little more to get a good quality mask, to give your hair topper a really good condition. You only use the mask on the length and ends of the hair as the conditioner can make the knots loose, this could result in losing hair from your hair topper.
- Leave the mask on your topper for at least 20 minutes, it’s also good to wrap the hair topper in a towel whilst the mask soaks into the hair. Rinse your hair topper under running lukewarm water again only rinse in the direction of the hair so you don’t risk tangling the hair.
- Use a plastic wig stand to dry the hair topper this will allow good ventilation around the cap and hair.
The hair topper will need to dry completely before you style and wear the piece. I would suggest leaving the hair topper to dry overnight on your stand. Do not brush the hair when it’s wet as you may cause damage to the hair.
Styling you hair topper
A human hair topper maybe the ideal solution to cover your hair loss or add the right amount of volume. At first you may be a little unsure on how you would style your hair topper to make it look natural with your own bio hair. It could also feel allot of hair to manage after having hair loss or thinning hair, this will all become second nature with practice.
A human hair topper has the advantage over a synthetic hair topper as it can be styled using heat tools just like your natural hair. You should always use a heat protection spray when using your straighteners or curling wand. Looking after your hair topper correctly will keep it looking its best for several years.
You can also wear your hair topper in a pony tail which is going to make you feel even better about your hair topper. Whatever activity you maybe doing you can style your hair topper to suit. Gather the hair up as you would when putting a ponytail in your own natural hair, you can also look at half up styles and braids.
